1/9th Plate Confederate Ambrotype with inscription F W Johnson
A absolutely stunning 1/9th Plate Confederate Ambrotype with inscription F W Johnson in the back. There was a F W Johnson who was apart of the 1st Regiment Virginia Artillery. After further investigation my hunch was a dead ringer finding another image of a pair of 1st Virginia Artillery Rebs in near identical uniforms. The image of Johnson is sporting a gorgeous Secession Cockade to top it all off!
His full name is Freeman W. Johnson he was transferred from the 1st Virginia Artillery into Capt Fraser’s Battery which was a Georgia Regiment that served in the ANV. At the battle of Fredericksburg he deserted and was captured by the Yankees. He was swapped back best I can tell and court martialed and made back to a private. He did survive the war. Living a long life in Georgia.
