Pristine CDV of Confederate General James Longstreet by Brady and Anthony!
James Longstreet, born January 8, 1821, in South Carolina, was the son of a planter. He graduated from West Point in 1842 and served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War, where he was wounded. When the Civil War began, Longstreet resigned from the U.S. Army and joined the Confederacy, quickly rising to brigadier general and later lieutenant general under Robert E. Lee.
Longstreet was known for his tactical skill and leadership, playing key roles in battles such as Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chickamauga. At Gettysburg, he famously disagreed with Lee's tactics, and his delays in executing orders led to controversy. Despite his success, his postwar career was marred by criticism, particularly after he joined the Republican Party, which angered many Southerners.
After the war, Longstreet became involved in business, wrote memoirs, and served in various political roles, including U.S. Minister to Turkey and U.S. Marshal for Georgia. He died in 1904, the last of the Confederate high command, and is buried in Gainesville, Georgia.
