CDV of General Sickles With Anthony/Brady Backmark
Daniel Sickles with Anthony Backmark. Sickles was a congressman when he shot Burton Key, his wife's lover. He became the first to claim temporary insanity-and got away with it. Society at the time scorned him-not for killing a relative of Francis Scott Key, but for taking back his 'tarnished' wife. A political General in the Civil War, appointed by Lincoln, Sickles commanded the Ill Corps at Gettysburg. He lost a leg in the battle and was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. During his recovery he engaged in a feud with Gen. Meade over his generalship and who had won the Battle of Gettysburg. After the War he was instrumental in acquiring land for what is now the Gettysburg National Military Park. His post War activities included diplomatic work-including a reported affair with the Queen of Spain. Great item-nice dark ink signature. Surely one of the most Colorful Generals of the Civil War. This CDV does have some damage in the bottom corner but it is still a amazing image for any collector!
