George Dennison Prentice, Editor, Publisher and Author. Held editorial positions with Connecticut newspapers until 1830 when he came to Kentucky to write a campaign biography of Henry Clay, the Whig presidential candidate. He remained in Kentucky and became editor and owner of the Louisville Journal first published November 24, 1830 to promote the candidacy of Henry Clay. He became one of the most acclaimed newspaper men in the United States. He was, until the demise of the Whig party, a major promoter and power in that party. In April 1855 after the Whig party became defunct he cast his support to the Know Nothing Party. A strong supporter of the Federal union he supported John Bell's Constitutional Party ticket in 1860. He remained a staunch Union supporter although often a critic of the Lincoln administrations policies. Despite this his two sons served as officers in the Confederate army. He sold the Louisville Journal to Henry Watterson who later combined with the Louisville Daily Courier to form the Louisville Courier-Journal.
