Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) was the 12th president of the United States, serving from 1849 until his death in 1850.
Taylor was a career officer in the US Army, Taylor fought in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Mexican-American War. He became a national hero after his victories at the battles of Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, Monterrey, and Buena Vista.
Taylor was the Whig candidate and won the election of 1848, defeating Lewis Cass. He had never voted in a presidential election before 1848.
His presidency was marked by controversy over the Compromise of 1850 and a cabinet scandal. He died from a stomach ailment 16 months into his term, leaving behind a divided country and a vice president, Millard Fillmore, who supported the Compromise of 1850.He married Margaret Mackall Smith and they had six children. Their second daughter, Sarah Knox Taylor, married Jefferson Davis, the future president of the Confederacy.
