A carte de visite (CDV) of William Lloyd Garrison, an American abolitionist with Anthony Backmark.
Garrison was a leader in the abolitionist movement in the United States. He was the editor of the anti-slavery newspaper The Liberator, which he published weekly for 35 years. Garrison's beliefs included:
An immediate end to slavery without compensation
Political and social equality for Black people
Peaceful moral suasion to influence people's behavior
The U.S. Constitution was a pro-slavery document
Women should be allowed to participate in the Anti-Slavery Society
Garrison's views differed from those of other statesmen, such as Abraham Lincoln, who wanted to preserve the Union and Constitution while ending slavery. Garrison died on May 24, 1879 and is buried in Boston's Forest Hills Cemetery.
