Identified Captured Confederate War Bond From Richmond, VA in Museum Frame with GAR Letter Documentation from fellow Veteran John S. Koster.
Talk about a piece of history! This amazing piece is a Captured Confederate War Bond From Richmond, VA captured by Captain F. C. Cook better known as Francis C. Cook. Captain Cook was a resident of Palmer, Massachusetts he served with multiple regiment through the Civil War On 10/15/1862, he was commissioned into "H" Co. Massachusetts 46th Infantry. He was Mustered Out on 7/29/1863 at Hampden Park, Springfield, MA On 3/11/1864, he mustered into Massachusetts 16th Light Artillery. He was Mustered Out on 11/25/1864 On 11/26/1864, he was commissioned into "A" Co. US Colored Troops 8th Heavy Artillery. He was Mustered Out on 2/10/1866. While none of these regiments Cook was present in were near Richmond, Virginia. Cook was sent on special orders to City Point, Virginia in April-May 1865. This information is corroborated by comrade John S. Koster on the GAR Letter Cover included in the frame. Koster was also resident of Palmer, Mass prior at the onslaught of the Civil War. The inscription on the letter reads, "Confederate Bond Captured at Richmond, VA April 1865 by Capt. F. C. Cook (Now Dead) and presented with others to his old comrades. John S Koster" Koster served with the 21st Massachusetts Infantry during the war and at the battle of Bethesda Church, VA his right arm was severely wound and amputated. Following the Civil War both men were active in the GAR. Captain Cook was a Member of GAR Post # 16 (E. K. Wilcox) in Springfield, MA until his passing in 1901. This piece of history is ready for display and is truly a spectacular war capture with attached provenance and history!
