Major Benjamin T. Green CDV “Cussin” Ben Green Surgeon 55th NC Infantry
55th North Carolina Infantry MAJOR BENJAMIN T. GREEN SURGEON, 55th North Carolina Infantry, Carte de Viste by Perkins of Baltimore, Md. Ided in contemporary pencil on verso by Colonel John English of Mississippi (his estate) Taken as a POW at Baltimore, CDV dates to July 1863, captured at Gettysburg and confined at Baltimore on July 15, 1863. Green bounced between Ft. Monroe, Ft. Norfolk, Ft. McHenry, and City Point before being exchanged on Nov. 23, 1863. Later, he joined the 14th NC and was captured again during Early's drive on Washington, July 13, 1864. All too familiar with Northern prisons, Green was held at the Old Capitol Prison, Ft. Delaware, and City Point before gaining exchange on August 12, 1864. When Richmond fell Green was a staff surgeon in the city, captured, and paroled April 19, 1865. Notation on verso states Green was known as "Cussin Ben Green". The Mississippi connection stems from brigade affiliation.
At Gettysburg (and before) Green's 55th NC was brigaded with the 2nd, 11th, and 42nd Mississippi under Joseph
R. Davis, Heth's Division, 3rd Corps. Green may have been acting as a brigade surgeon at Gettysburg. An outstanding image with his sash tinted red.
